About Custom Double-Leg Torsion Springs

Double-leg torsion springs are selected when two contact points need to move together or when a wider hinge or clamp benefits from force on both sides. Symmetry is important: small differences in leg angle, seating or contact position can make one side engage earlier than the other.

Key Design Characteristics

  • Both working arms need clearly defined contact radii and operating angles.
  • Coil spacing and the center section must match the shaft, bridge or central support in the assembly.
  • Leg synchronization is affected by manufacturing tolerance and by how the spring seats during installation.
  • Total torque should be divided according to the real geometry rather than assumed to split perfectly in half.

What to Specify for a Custom Quote

  • Wire diameter, coil ID and spacing between coil sections
  • Free angle and working angle for each leg
  • Total torque and the intended contact radius on each side
  • Center bridge or connecting geometry, if present
  • Winding direction, shaft details, cycles, material and quantity

Manufacturing Review

A functional fixture that supports the spring at the same spacing as the assembly gives a more meaningful inspection than measuring each leg independently. First-article checks should include simultaneous engagement.

Common Assembly Roles

  • Wide hinges and lids
  • Paired clamps or latches
  • Balanced return across two contact points

Next Design Decisions

Next Steps for Your Spring Design

Once the spring style is selected, confirm how it works in the assembly, which material suits the environment, how it will be manufactured and which dimensions and performance points should be controlled on the drawing.

Materials

Choose the material for the environment

High fatigue strength is often important because both legs can cycle repeatedly. Material and heat treatment should be chosen around angular travel and expected life, not only static torque.

Product Questions

Double-Leg Torsion Springs FAQ

Do both legs always carry equal force?

Only if their geometry, seating and contact points are sufficiently symmetrical. Assembly tolerance can cause one side to engage first.

Can two separate torsion springs replace one double-leg spring?

Sometimes. Separate springs can simplify adjustment, while a double-leg spring can reduce part count and maintain a fixed relationship between sides.
