About Custom Canted Coil Springs

Canted coil springs differ from ordinary garter springs because the coils are intentionally angled. That geometry can provide a relatively controlled force over useful deflection and makes the spring suitable for connector, detent and sealing interfaces. Groove geometry is part of the design because it controls how the canted coils deflect.

Key Design Characteristics

  • Coil cant angle and section geometry determine the working force range.
  • Groove width and depth control the installed deflection and retention of the ring.
  • The spring can be used for mechanical force, electrical contact, or both, depending on material and plating.
  • Joining quality matters because the ring often runs continuously around a precision interface.

What to Specify for a Custom Quote

  • Ring diameter and groove dimensions
  • Spring section size and available radial or axial deflection
  • Required insertion, retention or contact force
  • Electrical resistance or current requirement if applicable
  • Material, plating, environment, cycle count and quantity

Manufacturing Review

Canted geometry and joint consistency need dedicated process control. For electrical versions, surface finish and plating quality should be evaluated together with mechanical force rather than as a separate cosmetic operation.

Common Assembly Roles

  • Connector contact and retention
  • Circular detent or latching
  • Seal energizing where a controlled ring force is needed

How This Product Is Quoted

This category is reviewed from the drawing and working requirement rather than from a fixed public stock list.

Design reference

Canted-coil spring design is proprietary to specialist manufacturers (e.g. Bal Seal); no public cross-brand standard exists

Typical material direction

302 stainless, Elgiloy, beryllium copper (for EMI/conductive variants)

Why there is no fixed table

Radial or axial force, deflection and groove geometry are engineered per connector or seal drawing.

Next Design Decisions

Next Steps for Your Spring Design

Once the spring style is selected, confirm how it works in the assembly, which material suits the environment, how it will be manufactured and which dimensions and performance points should be controlled on the drawing.

Materials

Choose the material for the environment

Stainless, copper-base and nickel-base materials may be considered depending on force, conductivity, corrosion and temperature. Electrical designs may also require a compatible plating system.

Product Questions

Canted Coil Springs FAQ

Why use a canted coil instead of a conventional garter spring?

The angled-coil geometry can provide a different force-deflection profile and can be especially useful for connector, detent and electrical-contact functions.

Does the groove have to be designed with the spring?

Yes. Groove dimensions determine how the canted coil is retained and how far it deflects in service.
