Single-turn axial wave springs with overlapping ends, defined by working height, end freedom and radial installation clearance.
An overlap wave spring has a single wavy turn with ends that overlap rather than forming a closed stamped washer. The end arrangement permits circumferential movement as the spring changes diameter during axial compression. Selection must account for that movement inside the cavity. Specify axial load at working height and check both bore and shaft clearances throughout the required stroke.
A gap-type wave spring has separated ends; an overlap type has overlapping ends. Both differ from a continuous stamped wave washer. A multi-turn wave spring should be compared separately if the required travel is different.
Include cavity fit and freedom of end movement in acceptance checks. A load test between flat seats should use the agreed working height and any relevant radial constraint from the actual assembly.
Product Specification
Use these product-specific inputs to describe your requirement. Final dimensions, material and performance are confirmed against the drawing and operating conditions.
| Specification item | What to define |
|---|---|
| Cavity dimensions | Bore, shaft and available radial space. |
| Axial working range | Free height, working height and maximum deflection. |
| Required force | Load and tolerance at the installation height. |
| Overlap geometry | End overlap and permitted circumferential movement. |
| Material and section | Flat-wire width, thickness, grade and surface condition. |
Next Design Decisions
Once the spring style is selected, confirm how it works in the assembly, which material suits the environment, how it will be manufactured and which dimensions and performance points should be controlled on the drawing.

Product Questions
Compression changes the ring geometry. The overlap needs enough freedom to accommodate the intended movement within the cavity.
No. Working height, axial force, shaft clearance and the permitted end movement also need to be defined.
RFQ
A drawing is ideal. If you do not have one yet, provide the dimensions, load or torque, travel, environment and expected quantity that matter in the assembly.
