About Custom Snap Domes & Switch Springs

Snap domes and switch springs are designed around a force-displacement event rather than a simple linear spring rate. The part stores energy and changes shape quickly near the actuation point, creating tactile feedback and contact movement. Dome geometry, support condition and material thickness all influence the click feel.

Key Design Characteristics

  • Actuation force, return force and travel define the tactile response.
  • Dome diameter, height and formed features control the snap characteristic.
  • The support ring and mating contact layout influence repeatability.
  • Surface cleanliness and plating may matter when the spring also closes an electrical circuit.

What to Specify for a Custom Quote

  • Dome or spring outline, thickness and material
  • Actuation force and travel
  • Return-force or tactile-ratio target if applicable
  • Contact layout and electrical requirements
  • Cycle life, surface finish, environment and quantity

Manufacturing Review

These parts usually need tight control of forming height and material thickness. For switch use, force-displacement testing on samples is more meaningful than visual shape inspection alone.

Common Assembly Roles

  • Tactile pushbuttons
  • Membrane and control-panel switches
  • Snap-action electrical or mechanical interfaces

Made to Order

How This Product Is Quoted

This category is reviewed from the drawing and working requirement rather than from a fixed public stock list.

Design reference

Made to the keypad/switch PCB footprint supplied by the customer

Typical material direction

Stainless steel, phosphor bronze, beryllium copper

Why there is no fixed table

Actuation force (tactile "click" force) and travel are specified per switch design.

Next Design Decisions

Next Steps for Your Spring Design

Once the spring style is selected, confirm how it works in the assembly, which material suits the environment, how it will be manufactured and which dimensions and performance points should be controlled on the drawing.

Materials

Choose the material for the environment

Stainless spring strip is common for tactile domes because of corrosion resistance and forming behavior. Conductive plating can be added where the dome is part of the electrical contact.

Product Questions

Snap Domes & Switch Springs FAQ

What creates the tactile click in a snap dome?

The dome passes through a geometric instability during compression, causing a rapid change in force and shape near the actuation point.

Can actuation force be changed without changing the dome diameter?

Often yes, through thickness, height and geometry changes, but the return feel and fatigue life must be checked at the same time.
