About Custom Cylindrical Compression Springs

Cylindrical compression springs are the most direct choice when the assembly gives the spring a regular cylindrical envelope and the force acts along the spring axis. Their simple geometry makes load, travel, end condition and guidance easy to define, but long or slender designs still need attention to buckling and side contact.

Key Design Characteristics

  • Constant coil diameter keeps the package easy to locate in a bore or around a guide pin.
  • End style affects seating, squareness and how consistently the first active coil enters the load path.
  • Free length and working travel should be reviewed together so the spring does not approach solid height in normal use.
  • Long, narrow springs may need a guide rod, pocket or other support to keep the load axial.

What to Specify for a Custom Quote

  • Wire diameter and required outside or inside diameter
  • Free length, installed height and maximum compressed height
  • Load at one or more working positions, or the target spring rate
  • End condition such as open, closed, ground or application-specific
  • Cycle target, temperature, corrosion exposure and quantity

Manufacturing Review

For repeat production, the key controls are coil diameter, free length, end squareness and the load measured at defined heights. If the spring works on a guide, the guide clearance should be included in the drawing review rather than treated as an afterthought.

Common Assembly Roles

  • Plunger and button return
  • Contact or clamping force in a straight-line assembly
  • General preload where a conventional cylindrical envelope is available

Next Design Decisions

Next Steps for Your Spring Design

Once the spring style is selected, confirm how it works in the assembly, which material suits the environment, how it will be manufactured and which dimensions and performance points should be controlled on the drawing.

Materials

Choose the material for the environment

Music wire and alloy spring steels are common for compact, high-strength designs in protected environments; stainless grades are often chosen when corrosion resistance or cleanliness matters. Material selection should follow the environment and life target rather than the spring name alone.

Product Questions

Cylindrical Compression Springs FAQ

When does a cylindrical compression spring need a guide?

Guidance becomes more important as the free length grows relative to the coil diameter or when the load is not perfectly centered. A guide rod or bore can reduce bowing and side rubbing.

Do closed and ground ends always make a spring better?

No. They improve seating in many assemblies, but they also affect active coil count, solid height and cost. The end style should match how the spring is supported.
