Custom Spring Product Family

Custom Extension Springs

Custom extension springs—also commonly called tension springs—provide return force as the spring body is pulled apart. End style, initial tension, body length and load at extension are defined together for the assembly.

Product Family Overview

Extension and Tension Springs Made to Drawing

Extension springs store energy as the coils separate. In addition to the coil body, the hooks or loops are functional features that can control installation, alignment and fatigue life. The product pages above separate common end configurations so the attachment geometry can be reviewed before finalizing force and travel.

Selection

End Style Matters as Much as the Coil Body

A tension spring can fail at the hook even when the body stress is acceptable, so the connection to the assembly should be defined early.

Round hooks for general attachment

Round-hook designs are a practical starting point when the mating pin or hole can accept a conventional loop geometry.

German, English or offset hooks

Alternative hook forms change reach, orientation and stress concentration where the spring connects to the mechanism.

Initial tension and working extension

The required force before the coils begin to separate and the load at working extension should be specified independently of the free body length.

Custom Manufacturing Data

Small, Large and Heavy-Duty Extension Springs

Engineering data covers a range of wire diameters and spring envelopes, while made-to-order designs can be reviewed outside the listed examples. Small extension springs need careful hook control; heavy-duty extension springs need enough space and attachment strength for the higher stored energy.

Custom RFQ

What to Send for an Extension Spring Quote

For a custom extension or tension spring, define the installed connection and force requirement rather than relying on overall length alone.

  • Wire diameter or target load range
  • Body outside diameter and body length
  • Overall free length including hooks if critical
  • Initial tension
  • Load at a stated extension or total travel
  • Hook/loop style, orientation and mating feature
  • Material, environment, cycle life and quantity

Find a Spring Configuration

Choose the spring family and exact type first. Dimensional fields are optional and are used where that product family has comparable reference dimensions.

For wave springs, disc springs, washers, retaining rings, flat springs and spring pins, selecting the exact type is more important than filling every dimensional box.
